Cooking With Vegetables

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

With more and more people nowadays becoming concerned about the different heath issues and the different new diseases that have been discovered recently without any chances of cure as of the moment, majority are trying to incorporate more into their meals vegetable dishes while others are turning themselves into die hard vegetarians.

Everybody is aware of the fact that eating vegetables is very good for our health but sad to say people would prefer to have a burger and fries over a bowl of salad. It is also difficult especially for parents to let their children eat veggies partly because they don’t find them as tasty as other food types. You have to admit that there are really certain vegetables that even you would abhor to eat.

I suppose the only solution to making people eat vegetables is to prepare them using recipes that would enhance their taste. It is important that you mixed the right ingredients with it so that your family most especially the kids will love its taste. It is important also that we know how to prepare vegetables to get most out of the nutrition that it will be providing.

The first thing you need to do before cooking any vegetable is to clean them thoroughly. You may never know that there is bacteria lingering on the fresh vegetables and we definitely cannot see them with the naked eye. It is also important to wash them for we also may never be aware if chemicals were sprayed on them. Without proper cleaning some of the chemicals maybe mixed into our food with the possibility of intoxicating us that could lead to health problems.

It is important not to overcook your vegetables so that they would be crunchy and not mushy. Cooking it just right would also enhance the dishes especially if you are using bright colored veggies that could make any dish look so tempting to eat.

For example, if you are preparing broccoli remove the hard part of the stalks to enable the florets to cook evenly with the stems. Broccoli would go well with beef and even a simple salad.

Cauliflowers basically cook in almost the same way as broccoli since its stems are also edible. You should cook both broccoli and cauliflower in just the right time to make them still crisp and not soggy. For asparagus, remove also the thick part of the stem to allow even cooking for there is a tendency for the softer tips to cook quickly compared to its stems.

It is important to eat healthy to lead a well balanced life. Cooking vegetables as part of any meal would definitely prove to be a good choice.

The Practicality of Artificial Trees

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Most people seem to forget to water the trees in the house, especially those who have a busy life or leaving for work in the morning and returning home after endless hours and then cooking for the family. They seem to neglect the thought that their trees also need “food”.

There is a solution to that problem. Instead of having trees die two months after you buy them, try purchasing a few artificial trees. They have the same color and also have the same characteristics as fresh trees. Once a week, maybe on a weekend all you have to do while cleaning the house is walking up to your artificial tree and wiping it down with a wet cloth.

If you are not the kind of person that likes plastic trees, remember the artificial Christmas tree you had in your home last year and you spend countless amounts of minutes – maybe even hours – in front of it opening gifts with the family? Artificial trees are available in silk as well and they don’t only consist of a plastic trunk with a few plastic leaves. If you love cactuses, they are available in plastic as well; the nice thing about the cactuses is that they resemble the real thing.

Some of the arrangements and designs of these trees is just a grabber. They can easily be made and positioned as centerpieces in your home next to the television. What will probably grab your attention is the Bonsai Tree. We all know that they need attention and grooming to keep their beauty. Now you can have an artificial Bonsai tree in your home and need not worry about trimming anything. It can stand right there where you want it for a very long time and it will guarantee you that the beauty and color will always be there tomorrow and the day after.

Make Your Flower Borders the Envy of the Neighborhood

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Borders, as one sees in the pictures of the great country homes and gardens in England, are often a work of considerable art, painted with flowers.Often the borders there run 200 feet or more in length to 20 feet or more in width. Also, they are quite labor intensive, what with all the deadheading, cutting back, and weeding.

However, this is no reason for you to be without a mixed border or two of manageable proportions. A mixed border may have grasses, annuals, perennials, groundcovers, vines, shrubs, roses, or small trees in any combination.

Perennials are considered the mainstay of the mixed borders. Though some are short-lived, most live for years increasing in number. Each winter they die down, then spring comes and up they spring. Some bloom just once and briefly, while others may bloom, if dead-headed (removing the spent flowers), for months and months. Although there are perennials you never disturb, for example – peonies; most, however, need dividing every few years.

If you only have one mixed border, you probably would like to have flowers throughout the growing season. Choose plants that are lovely for more than just a week or two. If there are any gaps (no blooms) in the border, you can fill in with

annuals or other flowering plants in pots. Flowering shrubs and remontant (repeat blooming) roses add color to the background.

The border should be at least 10 feet wide. The plants should be planted in drifts of odd numbers . The plants should vary in height from low to high. To keep the border from looking like a stairway to heaven , vary a few drifts throughout the border with a drift of shorter plants in back and a drift or two of taller plants in front.

You may have borders using all types of color schemes. If you have 2 borders, you may choose to have one border of cool colors, and one border of hot colors. You may also have the border begin with cool colors and gradually increase the intensity of color until the other end has hot colors. Some people enjoy doing their borders with

just one color, using different shades and tints. Some are happy with using two colors of which they may be two complementary colors, such as red and orange, or contrasting colors, such as red and green.

Many people use three or more colors. Using color is a tricky thing with plants, particularly if you use different seasonal color schemes. Out of the blue two plants that are neighbors and should not bloom at the same time all of a sudden clash, because of strange weather. Use color to achieve unity. At the same time, shake things up a bit to create tension. This is a fine line. But all borders need a touch of pizazz to arrouse your neighbors’ envy to shades of green.

Plan Your Landscaping Down To The Last Detail

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

In order to landscape a backyard in such a way that no money or time will be wasted, it’s necessary to do the proper research before hand, as I explain in this article.

If you’d like to do some landscaping in your backyard, it’s not enough for you to just go to a local garden store and pick up a few plants and a few tools, and then get to work. You have to put in a little bit of thought and planning first.

The reason is simple – you’re going to be working with living things and living things thrive best in the correct soil and in the correct sunlight. If you don’t know the ph balance of your soil, or which spots of your backyard get the most sun and which parts get the most shade, you’ll be doing yourself a disservice when it comes to the landscaping, as you may find that your expensive plants don’t flourish as you’d hoped, and then you’ll have to do it all over again.

And then there’s the question of drainage. Are there soft spots in your lawn where the water automatically goes after a rainstorm? Is that where you want those soft spots to be? Does the ground have a slope that you’ll have to contend with? If you don’t have a fence surrounding your backyard…is there a view you’d like to emphasize and a view you’d like to de-emphasize?

It is only after you know all these things that you should actually begin planning your landscaping.

If you feel you don’t have the time to learn all the intricacies of ph balance and the best kinds of grass to use for your lawn, you can always hire a professional landscaper to do it all for you. You’ll find plenty of companies in the phonebook, but even here you’ll have to do your research. Make sure you hire a company that has been in the business for a long time and know what they’re doing. Check with the Better Business Bureau to ensure they have no complaints lodged against them. Ask for and check their references. They’ll probably have a website, which will make it easy for you to go online and compare different companies’ products and services, as well.

But part of the fun of working with your backyard is doing it all yourself!

So, you’ve researched and learned all the facts about your backyard that you need to know. You know which kind of grass will be best for your climate and which will stand up best to the hard use of kids running up and down, for example. You know where the shady spots are and the spots of sunshine. You know the drainage patterns and if there are any soft spots that you have to contend with. You know which currently existing trees you are going to keep, and which ones you are going to remove, if any. You know the best place to put the new trees you’re going to get…and what kind they’ll be.

So now all you have to do is design the landscaping.

Get yourself a three-ring binder, so that you can keep all your planning ideas in one spot. And then…plan. Start out with a list of all the goals you have for your landscaping – from grading the lawns to purchasing flowers and plants to erecting a conservatory – whatever you think of that you’d like, write it down. But don’t do anything yet.

Walk around the block, and talk to your neighbors and friends. Discuss your landscaping ideas with them. But this isn’t a case of keeping up with the Joneses! Don’t decide to build yourself a conservatory just because your neighbor wants one – your reasoning will be obvious. Unless you get along well with your neighbor and have no qualms about saying, “Yes, I loved his so much that I just had to get one of my own.” That type of good-natured respect between friends and neighbors is all to the good.

But more often than not you should design the landscaping around your likes and desires, and not what is “flavor of the month.”

Walk around your neighborhood, then, and see what your neighbors have done with their yards. Drive around other neighborhoods and see what’s happening there. You’ll be sure to get plenty of good ideas that you can adapt to your own yard. And then of course there’s the internet. If walking around your neighborhood gives you a few ideas, think how many ideas you can get from surfing the infinite reaches of the web.

There are plenty of print magazines that will give you tips on landscaping, from 101 Tips on Landscaping to Landscape Architecture to Horticulture to Fine Gardening.

But you’re still not ready to go out and buy those plants and tools. The next thing you need to do is make a plan of your landscaping, preferably to scale. You can do this on your own using graph paper, or you can purchase software that will enable you to make three-dimensional landscapes, all without lifting a shovel.

It is only after you have your landscape completely designed on paper that you should then transfer it to your backyard. And then you’ll have a masterpiece to enjoy.
